Determining computer specs

When a computer is donated to FreeGeek Columbus, it goes through a series of steps. The first step is to determine the performance specifications of the computer in order to determine whether it should be refurbished or recycled.

To determine the specs of a computer, we use a utility called

Post-building Instructions

Instructions for readying a newly built computer to be sold/donated.

If at any time during these procedures you find errors, add a small sticker to the case and mark the nature of the error: "part missing"; "HDD wipe failed"; "memtest failed"; "ubuntu won't load"; "no ethernet".

  1. Run diagnosis CD and write statistics on a sticker that is placed on the computer case.
    • Processor class (e.g., Pentium 4, Athlon 2100, etc.)
    • Processor speed (e.g., 1.6GHz, 800MHz, etc.)
    • Memory capacity (e.g., 1GB, 256MB, etc.)
    • Memory speed (e.g., 533MHz DDR, etc.)
    • Hard disk size (e.g. 40GB, etc.)
    • Optical disc drive type/speed (e.g. CD-RW 24x, DVD +R 48x, etc.)
  2. Wipe hard disk with DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) Reboot after finished. Write "WIPED" on sticker after hard disk size.
  3. Insert Ubuntu CD. When prompted, type "memtest" and hit enter. Write "OK" on sticker after memory size.
  4. Reboot after memtest finishes. When prompted by Ubuntu CD, just hit enter.

  5. Write version of Ubuntu installed on the sticker
  6. Check for detection of network card (System > Administration > Networking) and write on sticker (typ. "eth").
